Tackle Talk for the week of April 21

The high water on most streams and weather conditions this past week has not been the best for trout anglers, and only the hardcore anglers have been venturing out to fish their favorite streams.  Trout fishing has been good on southern streams.  Reports varied but most anglers caught at least some trout during the open week.  Most local streams have been above normal but some nice fish were taken from the Mahantango Creek, Armstrong Creek, and the Wiconisco Creek.  The baits of choice were waxworms, Mepp's No.00 spinners and large live nightcrawlers.  Butterworms and fathead minnows were also working well...

Tackle Talk for the week of April 14

The Susquehanna River levels have been receding slowly this past week.  North Branch fishing around the Danville area has been picking up with some nice smallmouth bass hook-ups at some of the popular locations.  Old Trail salted tubes in various colors and live medium shiners have been the baits of choice.  At Shady Nook and Isle of Que areas, some large smallies have been caught on live large shiners and nightcrawlers.  Some nice channel cats and flatheads have been caught at some of the popular areas.  The baits working best have been live nightcrawlers and chicken livers.  This past weekend...

Tackle Talk for the week of April 7

Water levels are still somewhat above normal on the Susquehannna River but anglers are reporting some good fishing form the Adam Bower Dam, south to McKees Half Falls. When the water is high and fast the best fishing is taking place in the backwaters, eddies and shoreline areas. The recent mild weather has made late-season smallmouth bass fishing above average. Live shiners are consistent producers along with motor oil 4-inch twist minnows and black/red flake tubes have been working well. Blue Fox No. 3 spinners have also been an effective bait. Muskie action has been good with some nice fish...

Tackle Talk for the week of March 24

Recent snow melt has increased water levels on the Susquehanna River and changed the depth and color of the water at most locations.  Lures in motor oil, smoke and chartreuse will catch fish.  Some rock bass are being caught in the deeper holes with fathead minnows and salted shiners.  Channel and fathead catfishing has been fairly good, with large live shiner, blood bait and chicken liver working well.  With some warm weather upon us, this coming week should be the start of some good fishing at all the popular locations.  Anglers were reporting some large smallmouth bass being caught this...

Tackle Talk for the week of March 17

The Susquehanna River has been higher than normal and off color at some locations, but anglers are reporting large numbers of smallmouth bass being caught, a lot of them keepers.  Most of the better fishing has been from PP&L Dam on the Shamokin Dam side south to Hoover's Island.  Rubber 3.5" twist minnows in olive green, smoke and pumpkin seed are working well.  Anglers fishing slowly and with patience are having the best luck and catching more fish.  Walleye season is coming to a close and anglers are reporting some good action at various spots, including most backwater locations.  The...
