Tackle Talk for the week of December 9

The Susquehanna River is higher than normal and off color from several days of rain but, with recent mild weather, late season smallmouth bass and walleye fishing has been good.  Some large smallmouths have been taken at the popular locations.  Smoke 3 1/2 inch twist grubs are a good choice, also 4 1/2 inch twist minnows in chartreuse, motor oil and green pumpkin have been very effective.  At the Adam Bower Dam walleye are being caught mostly on the Shamokin Dam side, where the baits of choice have been large nightcrawlers fished on double hook crawler rigs and live medium...

Tackle Talk for the week of December 2

Cold weather and high water from recent snow melt and rain on the Susquehanna River has slowed the fishing this past week. But with recent mild weather, late season smallmouth bass and walleye fishing has been good. Some large smallies have been taken at the popular locations. Smoke twisters, motor oil, 3.5 inch twist minnows and large live shiners have been very effective. Tackle Talk for the week of November 25

The colder weather has dropped the river water temperature into the 40s. Walleyes are still fairly active and seem to be hitting better during the day, though most of the larger ones are caught at night. Slow moving jigs fished close to the bottom and jerkbaits are working well for walleye. Some nice walleye and smallmouth bass have been taken at the Adam Bower Dam in the deeper holes and backwater areas. Old Trail salted tubes in smoke/black flake, purple/white, medium live shiners and No. 5 Shad Raps in bright colors. Catfishing at most locations has been good, live nightcrawlers...

Tackle Talk for the week of November 18

The Susquehanna River has been up and down several inches this week but it remains to be seen if any of the storms that may hit the northern part of the state will affect the river here. Smallies are still hitting some surface lures at times, such as Smithwick Devils Horse, Heddon Tiny and Baby Torpedoes and Gaines Crippled Killer's are working well. Walleye catches have been good in several places but sporadic in others. The lures of choice for walleye have been Rapala Glass Raps in various colors. All baits should be fished slow and close to the bottom...

Tackle Talk for the week of November 11

Anglers are reporting good fishing in most area streams and on the Susquehanna River at most of the popular locations, but we have to wait and see how the rain affects the fishing in coming days.  With the bags lowered at the Adam Bower Dam with good water and wadeable conditions for the most part anglers have been doing well.  There have been large numbers of fisherman along the banks and in boats form the Bower Dam south to McKee's Half Falls.  The smallmouth bass action has been pretty good at most areas on the river.  Old Trail 3 1/2inch...
