Tackle Talk for the week of January 20

The Susquehanna River has been a challenge lately.  The high off color water has made most fishing difficult.  Some anglers are reporting some good hook ups in the eddies and backwater areas.  There have been some nice smallmouth bass caught in the area of the Adam Bower Dam and Shady Nook. Old Trail 3.5 inch salted tubes fished slowly and close to the bottom, with a good attractant such as Smelly Jelly are doing the trick.  Walleye fishing has also been fair at most of the popular locations on the river.  Some of the better baits have been Swedish Pimples,...

Tackle Talk for the week of January 13

The river is higher than normal and of color in some areas.  The walleye fishing has picked up with some action below both the Adam Bower Dam and the PP&L power dams.  Walleye have been caught on medium shiners, jerkbaits and 5-inch twist rubber minnows during daylight.  At dusk and after dark Rapala F-11 in clown and hot steel are working well.  Smallies are still hitting surface lures at times, such as Gaines Crippled Killer's.  The colder temperature and weather has dropped water temperature into the 30's.  Some of the better fishing is coming from deeper hole along the shoreline....

Tackle Talk for the week of December 30

The Susquehanna River has been on the rise this past week from recent rain, but the fishing has been good for the hardy angler who can brave the cold water and lower temperatures. Most smallmouth bass are being caught along the shoreline and in eddie areas. Walleye and smallie fishing should continue to been good at most popular locations on the river weather permitting. Twist tail 5-inch rubber minnows are working well, some of the better colors have been green...

Tackle Talk for the week of December 16

Weather conditions are winter like and the Susquehanna River is higher than normal by several feet and off color. There is some good fishing available to hardy anglers braving the cold temperatures. On both the West and North branches of the river the shoreline eddies are producing some nice walleye and smallmouth bass on large live shiners, large Rooster Tails and Mepp's spinners with tails in various colors, from the PP&L dams south, smallies and walleye fishing has been good. Motor oil, white chartreuse and pearl 3 1/2 inch rubber twist minnows or grub shapes are producing some nice fish....

Tackle Talk for the week of December 9

The Susquehanna River is higher than normal and off color from several days of rain but, with recent mild weather, late season smallmouth bass and walleye fishing has been good.  Some large smallmouths have been taken at the popular locations.  Smoke 3 1/2 inch twist grubs are a good choice, also 4 1/2 inch twist minnows in chartreuse, motor oil and green pumpkin have been very effective.  At the Adam Bower Dam walleye are being caught mostly on the Shamokin Dam side, where the baits of choice have been large nightcrawlers fished on double hook crawler rigs and live medium...
