Tackle Talk for the week of August 21st

Water conditions on the Susquehanna River are still low and making boating hazardous for fisherman in some areas.  With water temperatures in the high 80’s shorts and sneakers are the fisherman gear of choice.  Topwater smallmouth bass action has been very good this past week.  Crippled Killer’s,Rapala Skitter-Pop’s, River2Sea Whopper Ploppers, Rebel Pop R, Heddon Crazy Crawlers and Cordell Boy Howdy topwater lures are bringing in some nice fish to the top.  Mepps and Blue Fox No. 4 and No. 5 are working well around weed beds.  Original Rapala lures in various sizes in silver/black and gold/black body are working very well after dark.  Channel catfish are starting to group up and some of the best fishing will be in the deeper holes.  Charlie Bloodbath fished on treble spring hooks is a good choice for large cats.  Walleye action has been slow, but some anglers are reporting some hook-ups in the McKees Half Falls area on War Eagle spinner baits.  Some nice crappie are being caught at Walker Lake on small rubber grubs of various colors.  Bass are also being taken at Faylor Lake with Scum Frog lures and rubber 6-inch Squirmin’ lizards are all the baits of choice.  The fishing has been best in deeper water and along the shore lines.
